Martin Markvarsden Highland Park Soren Solkaer

There are two things about Martin Markvardsen that give away his devotion to whisky and in particular, his love of Highland Park. The first is the tattoo over his heart; Martin is so passionate about the brand that he had the Highland Park amulet and the motto of Orkney permanently inked on his body. The second giveaway is that Martin won’t drink anything made of grapes!

Danish Rock Photographer Captures Life on Orkney – Inside and Outside the Distillery Walls. Towards the end of last year, as part of a special collaboration with Highland Park, the established Danish rock photographer Søren Solkær travelled to Orkney to capture the extreme landscapes and explore the lives of those who live and work on the islands.

As well as his role as Key Account Manager for Beam Suntory, our distributor in Germany, Jens Rosenburg also heads up a team of three local Brand Ambassadors.

In the nine years Jens has been working with Highland Park he has become somewhat an expert on the best places to buy and drink Whisky in Germany. In this interview we asked him to tell us about Hamburg, where he also lived for 12 years.

Toad in the Hole, that wonderfully traditional dish, has been recorded in history as early as the 18th Century, although no one can agree on the origin of it’s unusual name.

Until now, we have never considered altering the recipe from the reliable original, however Signe Langford of Signe’s Kitchen, has used Highland Park Whisky-infused sausages in her alternative recipe. Why didn’t we think of that?

On Orkney there is always a flurry of activity during December, from the lighting of the two Norwegian Christmas trees inside and outside the St Magnus Cathedral, to the annual Orkney Arts and Crafts Fair in the Kirkwall town hall. But one of the most celebrated events of the Orkney calendar is ‘The Ba’ Game’, which takes place on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day every year, and a tradition that many of our distillery workers take part in.
